Man without a community

by Jay Cross on October 11, 2007

I clicked internettime.ning.com and was surprised to see this:
Banned

So I put a brief message in the box and got back this email:

“Jay Cross, whom you banned from Internet Time, has sent you this message:

say what?

If you want to allow Jay Cross back on Internet Time, click here to go to banned people page to remove the ban.”

I give it a click but it won’t let me see the “banned people page” because I myself am banned.

I’m homeless tonight.

Weird, but that’s what happens when someone else owns your data. Ning is an excellent SNS in a box, but you can’t use it for core business activities because you don’t control it.

I’m laughing, but this must be very frustrating for you – a bit like needing to produce your passport to get your passport back!

Karyn, I always have a scan of my passport just in case.

And in this case, Ning responded immediately, fixing the problem. The banishment was my error, not theirs.

Feels good to be back!

I think Ning are doing some great things at the moment and they are excellent in providing support. I got a response and a fix within 5 minutes of reporting an issue.

Of course there will be limitations, but as an ondemand solution it works well for the right situation. There are many other hosted services that companies rely on for business, I don’t see why Ning can’t be one of them.

So big thumbs up from me.
