Free-Range Drama Farm » Learnscaping the Drama FarmSun, 13 May 2007 04:14:51 +0000http://informl.com/?p=697#comment-653[...] One of the things I keep coming back to after reading Informal Learning is the idea of a “learnscape”. Here’s an excerpt from an article Jay Cross wrote, explaining the concept: Informal learning is about situated action, collaboration, coaching, and reflection, not study and reading. Developing a platform to support informal learning is analogous to landscaping a garden. A major component of informal learning is natural learning, the notion of treating people as organisms in nature. Our role as learning professionals is to protect their environment, provide nutrients for growth, and let nature take its course. Self-service learners connect to one another, to ongoing flows of information and work, to their teams and organizations, to their customers and markets, not to mention their families and friends. It includes ways of thinking about the different needs, the different tools, and systematic steps to get from content on a screen with a quiz, or virtual classroom, to a performance ecosystem (Jay Cross’ learnscape). I look forward to studying your article, and working on it with the people where I work at the Centre for Learning Innovation in Strathfield, Sydney Australia.
Note that there is no entry on wikipedia for learning ecology, although there is one for Knowledge ecology.A fascinating article, Jay – I’ve been researching the concept of learning ecology lately, and come across a few interesting articles that – as usual in a new field – proceed from the author’s understanding of a narrow part of their field. Jay CrossSat, 03 Feb 2007 06:46:43 +0000http://informl.com/?p=697#comment-650Mark, my concept of the learnscape has room for planting traditional, formal learning. These are the "bus rides" that are great for novices (and required for compliance). As for your clients, I understand that you need to sell them what they're willing to buy. However, I hope that you'll point out that often the formal/ADDIE approach is not the most effective route to take.
I love the Pattern Recognition quote, but take it to mean that we need informal learning precisely because we have insufficient now. Planning for the unpredictable is folly.Mark, my concept of the learnscape has room for planting traditional, formal learning.
