Social Media Club

The Social Media Club. Cool idea. I’ll be jabbering about Informal Learning at their upcoming unconference:

Web 2point2 – San Francisco: November 9th and 10th

Who should attend: Anybody interested in bridging the gap between this Web 2.0 technology and the folks who would like to use it.

What: Join us for a two day ‘unconference’ on all things deemed ‘Web 2pointOh’ (and beyond) that will be filled with interesting conversations, insightful tips and tricks, and plenty of opportunities to show off your mad skills while helping others come into the fold. The primary focus of the conversations is expected to be on what is next and what is needed to bring these great advancements to the rest of society. There will also be an after party at Fluid (662 Mission Street) with an open bar (beer and wine), light snacks and live music with a DJ.

Where: Microsoft Conference Center, 1 Market Street, San Francisco
When: November 9th and 10th, from 10am to 6pm each day
Costs: Registration is $32.95, each registrant will receive a t-shirt, lunch and access to the Web 2.2 Release Party.

Proposed Main Stage topic:

Informal Learning & Web 2.0.

People acquire the skills they use at work informally — talking, observing others, trial-and-error, and simply working with people in the know. Web 2.0 is the classroom of the future. Formal training and workshops account for only 10% to 20% of what people learn at work. Most corporations over-invest in formal training while leaving the more natural, simple ways we learn to chance.

Informal learning is the unofficial, unscheduled, impromptu way most of us learn to do our jobs. Informal learning is like riding a bicycle: the rider chooses the destination and the route. The cyclist can take a detour at a moment’s notice to admire the scenery or help a fellow rider.

Let’s talk about unworkshops, community-building, and other alternatives to old-style training.
