Collaboration technology at work

by Jay Cross on August 28, 2006

This morning I joined an active audio discussion on informal learning with a bunch of people in California, Canada, Maine, Spain, and  locations in between about topics like these…..

  • informal learning is every day, not episodic
  • some have perkshops, not workshops
  • peer programming
  • morning think meetings of the team, followed by pairing off
  • XP as the model: XL?
  • virtual mindmeld through shared screens
  • conviviality at work
  • Brittanica knowledge vs. Wikipedia knowledge

Our technology? Free Conference Call + Internet Relay Chat. Very reliable. This was Yi-Tan Conversation #99.

Informal learning as continuous forces me to think that the weekly staff meetings are as pointless as I always felt they were. With the informal nature of collaboration, a weekly staff meeting only serves to update the ones out of touch from the real goings on in the organization.
